Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA 2488) is a highly water-soluble synthetic polymer with excellent film-forming, emulsifying, and adhesive properties. The “2488” refers to a specific degree of hydrolysis (~87–89%) and viscosity grade (~27–33 cps at 4% solution), which affects its solubility, film strength, and compatibility.

Here’s a detailed overview of PVA 2488 uses:

1. Adhesives
  • Used in wood glue, paper glue, and packaging adhesives.

  • Forms strong, flexible films when dried.

  • Common in bookbinding, corrugated board lamination, and paper coating.

2. Textile Industry
  • Serves as a warp sizing agent for cotton, wool, and synthetic yarns.

  • Protects yarn from friction and breakage during weaving.

  • Can be blended with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for enhanced sizing.

3. Coatings & Films
  • Produces water-soluble films, e.g., detergent pods, packaging films, or soluble bags.

  • Used in paper coating to improve printability and surface finish.

  • Forms protective films in coatings for metals, ceramics, or textiles.

4. Construction Industry
  • Improves adhesion, workability, and water retention in cement or gypsum-based plasters.

  • Similar to HPMC, but less commonly used for construction because HPMC provides better rheology control.

5. Paper Industry
  • Enhances surface strength, printability, and coating adhesion.

  • Often combined with pigments or fillers in paper coatings.

6. Emulsions & Dispersions
  • Acts as a stabilizer for suspensions and emulsions in paints, adhesives, and coatings.

  • Prevents settling of pigments and fillers.

7. Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Uses
  • Can be used as a film-former in tablets or capsules, though other grades are more common.

  • Sometimes used in cosmetic gels or face masks for film formation and smooth texture.

Key Properties of PVA 2488

  • Soluble in warm or cold water.

  • Forms flexible, clear films.

  • Non-toxic and biodegradable.

  • Compatible with many plasticizers, fillers, and pigments.
